Senior Program Kick-Off Meeting for both S&T and OEC

Attend a Senior Program Kick-Off meeting with Don Messier and Ed Sargent

The National Ski Patrol Senior Program is a national education opportunity that is offered at the region level broken down into two separate components.  If you are interested in becoming a Senior Candidate, please join us in an introductory meeting scheduled for Friday evening form 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the McIntyre Ski Area.

The Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) Senior component allows candidates opportunities to further develop and enhance skills in the areas of leadership, decision making, and problem management of complex emergency care situations that may be encountered in a ski patrol environment.

The Senior Ski and Toboggan program allows candidates opportunities to further develop and enhance advanced skills in the areas of toboggan handling and skiing, or snowboarding, on the most challenging terrain in the Region.

Successful completion of the Senior S&T component, which is now known as Outdoor Emergency Transportation (OET), requires attending Senior level clinics where Division certified Trainer’s help candidates develop their own self-paced training progression to understand and achieve the Senior skill level.

Attainment of the OEC component requires completion of three phases, training clinics, written exercises and a final on-hill evaluation.  The program is designed to both develop and challenge candidates’ skills in managing complex multiple injury and multiple patient situations that they can expect to encounter as ski patrollers.  Candidates will develop their skills not only as OEC technicians, but also as leaders, problem solvers and emergency scene managers.

Both of these programs are fun, challenging and educational, both will be offering a calendar of more than 10 training opportunities.  These events will be posted on the NH Region’s monthly calendar and will open for registration in December.  Requests for information can be directed to the Program Advisors:

Ed Sargent, Senior Outdoor Emergency Care Advisor
Don Messier, Senior Ski and Toboggan Advisor

If you would like to be on the Senior Program Email List and receive information from Ed Sargent and Don Messier, please fill out the form below:

Senior OEC Clinic @ Ragged Mountain

Training clinics are a significant and important part of the OEC Module of the Senior Program.  While the clinics are structured to help candidates prepare for a successful final evaluation, they serve a more important objective.  During clinics, candidates will be presented with realistic emergency scenarios that are complex in nature and require sound leadership, management and problem solving skills.

During clinic scenarios, candidates generally work in teams of three patrollers, one of whom serves as the team leader.  The scenarios will be designed to enhance and develop the management skills of the team leader.   It is a constructive process that sharpens the candidates’ skills and confidence, enabling solid reliable performance in complex and normally stressful emergency care situations.

Each candidate need to successfully perform as a leader in four clinic scenarios under the guidance of an OEC Trainer Evaluator to be eligible for the final evaluation.

Candidates are encouraged to attend several clinics, where they will have the opportunity to learn from one another as well as experienced trainers.  Feel free to contact the Advisor or any of the staff members to request additional Senior OEC training.

Senior OEC Pre-Course Classroom Clinic

This course is an introductory Senior OEC training course designed to prepare candidates for on-snow training and the high stress of the final exam.  It is held in a traditional classroom setting where students not only learn about the program's numerous performance objectives and the "critical standards" required to successfully pass; more importantly, students get a chance to peer into the inner workings of the human brain to learn about themselves.

Practicing to pass the Senior OEC exam is not enough.  Learning to understand what happens inside your own brain while conducting triage during a high stress medical management scenario is paramount.   This course helps candidates assemble winning strategies that can be used not only to pass the Senior exam, but to become better first-aiders, patrollers and rescuers.

Take this classroom pre-course to lay down a solid Senior testing foundation, then attend the required "on-the-snow clinics" to acquire the experience and practice needed for exam day.  We promise that every student will learn something valuable about themselves and about being effective test takers under stress. . .
