OET TE Instructor Activity
Video Motion Analysis
OET Trainer-Evaluators instruct Skiing and Toboggan Handling for the Senior Program. Motions analysis has shifted to the new PSIA Five Fundamentals of skiing. Please review the “FIVE” below, watch each video and prepare a PISI based analysis for each.
- Control the relationship of the CM (center of mass) to the BOS (base of support) to direct PRESSURE along the length of the skis.
- Control PRESSURE from ski to ski directing PRESSURE toward the outside ski.
- Control EDGE angles through a combination of inclination and angulation.
- Control the skis’ ROTATION (turning, pivoting, steering) using leg rotation, separate from the upper body.
- Regulate the magnitude of PRESSURE created through ski-snow interaction
A more detailed review of how to apply the Five Fundamentals to skiing and toboggan handling can be found in this OET Article titled, “The Five Fundamentals applied by OET Instructors,” posted on January 9, 2018.
Remeber to practice structuring all analysis using the PISE structure. While coaching (providing guided practice) on the slopes, OET TEs provide individualized positive immediate student feedback used during guided practice (Chapter 3 Human Relations and Communication). PISE is the memory technique instructors use to remind themselves to communicate most effectively:
P = lead with something POSITIVE
I = choose one IMPROVEMENT
S = give SPECIFIC tasks of guidance
E = EVALUATE with a grade
Study the video clips and thoughtfully write a PISE involving one statement of the fundamental Five in your P and one in your I. The purpose of watching videos helps develop observational skills, motion analysis using the Five Fundamentals, and the TEs skill of positive immediate feedback. Abstractly thinking about these concepts off the slope develops a coach’s ability to quickly assemble PISE communications live on the slopes while coaching Senior Candidates.
Linked Medium Radius Turns -- Video Analysis
Remember to structure a PISE around coaching one concept. Help the Senior Candidate with one improving one skill at a time. You may write-up several seperate PISE submissions.
Use the text entry box to write a PISE analysis. Write the statement in the same way that it might be spoken to the candidate immediately upon arrival on the slope after a guided practice run.
