NH Region YAP Program
The Young Adult Patrol (YAP) program consists of young adults between the ages of 15 – 18 and still in high school. These Young Adults actively participate in programs working toward becoming certified NSP Ski Patrollers. They attend Outdoor Emergency Care courses to prepare them for providing 1st Aid care to injured guests on the mountain. This course is designed to be comparable to a National Registry EMT course, with emphasis on skills designed for the outdoor environment. After successfully completing their OEC course, the YAP’s start working with their prospective mountains on local protocols, learning the mountain side of the industry. Some of the skills they work on are Skiing and Tobogganing. These skills will aid them in bringing injured guests safely to the mountain 1st Aid room for further evaluation. After completing sign off checklists, the YAP’s will earn the right to wear the coveted red parka with the white cross. This signifies they have become an Alpine Patroller with the National Ski Patrol.
The NH Region YAP program provides multiple events throughout the Ski Season to further enhance the YAP and their Skills. The NH Region has scheduled 3 events for the 2024 Ski season. These events are:
1/21 – Loon Mountain Resort will be hosting a Skiing and Tobogganing day. The YAP’s will work with instructors and drills to further enhance these skills.
2/10 – Abenaki Ski Area will host an OEC day. On this day, the YAP’s will be involved with medical scenarios in an outdoor ski environment. They will work in teams to address medical issues as found on the mountain.
2/25 – Pats Peak Ski Area will host a day of combined skills. The YAP’s will work on both OEC Skills and Skiing and Tobogganing skills. This is in preparation for the NSP Eastern Division YAP Summit.
The NSP Eastern Division summit is an annual event held at ski mountains in the eastern division (West Virginia to western NY and up to Northern Maine). This year the Summit will be held at Smugglers’ Notch Resort in Jeffersonville VT. This event provides 2 tracks for the YAP to attend. There is a competing track where the YAPs are broken into peer groups and will compete in OEC, Skiing, and Tobogganing skills. The other track is the enhancement track. New YAPs are guided through OEC, Skiing, and Tobogganing skills by instructors from the Division, Region, and local level. At the completion of the event a large banquet is held where the YAP’s receive awards for many different skill sets.
