Greetings!

Now that some snow has arrived, the Mount Washington Avalanche Center started posting daily Backcountry Avalanche Forecasts here on their website. These forecasts are a great resource for anyone planning to travel in the Presidential Range. If you’re planning to ski Tuckerman, hike the Lions Head Trail or climb in Huntington the MWAC site should be your first stop for avalanche and weather info. In addition to the official reports from the US Forest Service Snow Rangers, you can find observations from local guides and fellow recreationists.

Mount Washington conditions started off with a bang – 1.78″ of SWE (snow water equivalent) and winds in the 80-125 mph range – leading to a High danger rating on MLK Day. The two videos below from the National Avalanche Center are great refreshers for understanding an avalanche forecast, covering the Danger Scale and Avalanche Problems. If you want to learn more, check out the NSP Avalanche course offerings on the region calendar.
